Providing Access to Clean Water

Clean and safe water is not found everywhere in Uganda, and not everyone has access to it. In many isolated, rural areas, people have to walk for miles to find water which is unclean and unsafe to be used. According to Water.org, 7 million Ugandans lack access to safe water, and 28 million lack access to adequate sanitation facilities.
The water crisis hinders children from going to school and parents from working, and this increases illiteracy and poverty in water-deprived communities. Bore holes, wells, or a piped water system are the solutions to making clean water easily accessible, even in the poorest community. As the saying goes, “Water is life.” Providing access to clean water saves lives.

Our Impact

In October 2022, Serve a Smile Foundation partnered with Abumakkah Foundation on a project to drill boreholes to provide clean, fresh water to 523 households in Luweero District, Wobulenzi Town Council, Mulusa Village. The project involved installing several vertical pipes and well screens to keep out surface contaminants. Serve A Smile Foundation contributed $1,500 to the project, which has provided the village with its own water source so that families no longer have to walk miles to collect clean water.

Help us Meet the Challenge

In Uganda’s water crisis, there are signs of hope. Access to safe water increased from 57 percent of the population in 2000 to 78 percent by 2020, according to UNICEF. You can be part of the solution for those Ugandans still without safe, potable water by supporting our clean water project, which focuses on communities that have yet to be served by larger nonprofits.

Project Fundraising Goal: $150,000 (USD)

If we can raise $150,000, we will be able to build boreholes, water wells and/or piped taps in underserved areas of Wakiso District, Luweero District, Mbale District, Karamoja District and Lira District. Our goal is to build five of any of the above water resources, depending on what is most readily achievable in each location.
